Back to the Basics: Leveraging Our Experience and Resources

Back to the Basics: Leveraging Our Experience and Resources
Presented by: John Hooks and George Cobbs

Unions and their membership continue to face uphill battles in healthcare funding and benefits, in particular, mental health and substance abuse. As we move into an even more uncertain future, we need to take a closer look at how Unions have traditionally used internal as well as local resources (Critical Debriefing Teams, local Self-Help groups, etc.) and our own ingenuity to cover the gaps. This is only one leg of a three prong strategy to continue to assist members and their families struggling with substance abuse issues and other traumatic mental health concerns. Another area is building strategic alliances with providers of substance abuse services, mental health providers, and supportive politicians. We have to use our collective strength through grassroots efforts to impact health care legislation. We must resurrect old models used in the past, such as mentoring and networking. The last prong of the strategy is the continuation of education for Members Assistance Program, joint Labor-Management program EAP programs, and their alliance with local community resources, such as United Fund resources, local crisis centers, local educational resources, ALANON, and Alcoholics Anonymous & others.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:
  1. Understand the network of available resource of support for members.
  2. Begin to build strategic alliances with mental health/sub abuse provider network.
  3. Incorporate grassroots options for support into the current program.

Presenters:

George Cobbs, Jr. worked in the Longshore industry for the past 43 years. For 24 of those, he was an employee assistance person. For the first 14 he was a longshoreman and has maintained his union book for the entire 38 years. He currently serves as the President of the San Francisco Bay Area ILWU Pensioners Club. By participating in the club he still maintains his close affiliations with the ILWU. Giving back to an organization like the ILWU is the least that he can do for an organization that always supported him. He is proud to be a union person and especially proud to be a member of the ILWU.
