Is using peers or other officers the only way an EAP can work in the Law Enforcement Community? A simple problem can become a very serious and dangerous situation very rapidly. The work done by police & Correction officers is so special. Just imagine the difference in an officers going to work angry or upset versus a manager of a super market or library going to work upset. Discuss the unique roadblocks to recovery and specific strategies that work best with this population.

Objectives:

  1. Be able to identify the needs of Public Safety Personnel.
  2. How to better work with Public Safety Personnel.
  3. Show how to over come roadblocks when working with this population.

Presenters:

Lt. Daniel Ryan, LADC-1, CEAP, has been an Officer with the Suffolk County Sheriffs Department for 28 years and helped develop the Departments Employee Assistance Program, EAP Coordinators in 2001. Currently he is the President of the Massachusetts Chapter of LAP and has held various post in his union AFSCME local 3643.

Sgt. Herbert White, Jr., MS, has been a Sergeant in the Boston Police Department for 37 year and has been director of the Boston Police Peer Support Unit and Critical Incident Support Team for the past two and a half.
